Blog Tip of the Day

You’re a blogger. Do you have a media kit? If your answer was “no,” don’t panic. It’s okay — many bloggers don’t! However, if you’re interested in engaging with businesses (however large or small) for things like sidebar ads, giveaways, and sponsored content, it’s important to put something together to outline who you are as a brand and what you can offer an advertiser (and how much it’s going to cost them!).

While media kits can be designed to match your specific aesthetic and look super profesh (and yes, shameless plug here: I design them or can teach you how to create and use them!), it’s not necessary to have a multi-page PDF if you don’t have the time, know how, or money to make one. Often, a simple Word doc or PowerPoint can suffice. On the flip side, kits are a great way to tell a visual story about who you are as a brand, and as it’s likely the first business doc a brand will see from you, it’s never a bad idea to give them a positive first impression. As a blogger, you already know: visuals matter!

Here’s what a media kit should include:

(PSST! Get the full version of the post, and a TON more info on media kits, right over here)

Want info on when to actually send your kit (and when not to), additional stats and qualitative data you should include, where you can find those numbers, and more? You can download my entire guide to creating the perfect media kit here.

Capeche!! I JUST had this conversation with someone last week, so this is right on time! What should the stats look like before considering selling ads on the blog?

You are amazing! This is just what I am looking for!! I think I’m still in the beginning stage of building up my readership. I’ve recently moved to a wordpress self hosted blog and still getting used to the whole stats thing… I was wondering what plugins would you recommend to use? (there is so many out there and it gets ovewhelming)

Thank you SO much for this!

    Such great info!!! Thank you!

Also, Amanda raises a good point, albeit my question is a derivative of hers. If I am still a relatively small WordPress-hosted blog but have a great Google page rank, should I consider moving to a self-hosted platform to get those google analytics unique visitor stats now (since free wordpress only allows page views, not unique)? Or, should I wait until my traffic is higher and potentially lose my great page rank then rather than bite that bullet now? I’ve been trying to decide and read so many conflicting arguments on this…

Fantastical advice! This type of media kit would also be a great thing to send out to DIGITAL PR firms since they usually aska number of bloggers to cover their events/clients/etc {make sure you send out to “digital” pr firms…blogging = digital coverage}.

Hi! I just started following and just read this wonderful post. These are great tips! I am really having a difficult time with this and I’m a little confused. Yesterday I put together my “sponsor” page and there is a lot of info. I tried to make it as brief as possible, if I don’t give enough info, they won’t understand what Skylar Magazine and they won’t get the concept or my mission. There is like no possible way for me to shorten it anymore than I have.

Anyway, I basically have most of what you mentioned above written on that page, so I’m wondering if I would still need a media kit, or if I could just use that and have potential sponsors go there. Or could I copy and paste it and save it as a doc and use that as my media kit?

    http://skylarinc.blogspot.com/p/sponsor-us.html

    Thanks:)

    Sarah
