Book List

I fell into the trap of surfing on Amazon this past weekend, and of course, ended up finding a ton of books to add to my “must read” list. I also re-visited my Amazon wishlist and rediscovered a couple things that have been on there FOREVER (don’t you love when that happens?).

(Aside: one book I did end up buying — I finally downloaded Yuli Ziv’s  Blogging Your Way to the Front Row. It’s on sale for $4.99 right now on Kindle! I don’t even own a Kindle, but I downloaded it and plan on reading it on my laptop!)

Here are some books that made the list. Any others that should be here?

Thin Places: A Pilgrimage Home – I’ve had this book on my Amazon wishlist for a long time. From one of the reviews, “Trained at Harvard, the author ventured to rural southeastern Nepal during the 1990s to study the relationship between the villagers and their land use in a region bordering a new national park. Her developing connection with these hard-laboring, superstitious people transformed not only her research but the way she resolved to live her life.”

740 Park: The Story of the World’s Richest Apartment Building — The title pretty much says it all! I’m fascinated to learn more about the history and residents of one of New York’s most famous apartment buildings.

Bringing Up Bebe — I first came across this book when the Wall Street Journal ran an article about it several weeks ago. I think it’s interesting to see how different cultures approach parenting. And — not that I’m anywhere close — but maybe it’ll come in handy some day.

Thinking, Fast and Slow — I love non-fiction books like this. From the review: “Engaging the reader in a lively conversation about how we think, Kahneman reveals where we can and cannot trust our intuitions and how we can tap into the benefits of slow thinking. He offers practical and enlightening insights into how choices are made in both our business and our personal lives—and how we can use different techniques to guard against the mental glitches that often get us into trouble.”

Imagine: How Creativity Works – Another fascinating non-fiction read, this book lookt at the myths around creativity, how to enhance it, and why there’s no such thing as a “creative type.” Interesting!

The House I Loved — A novel with Paris as a back drop during the Haussman building era? Yes, please!

Chanel: Collections and Creations — I’m always happy to add new “coffee table” books to my collection. While I’m amassing a good number of interiors books, I own hardly any fashion retrospectives, and this Chanel tome would be a good place to start.

Valentino: Themes and Variations — Ditto!

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey — Downton Abbey is officially between seasons, but to sate any cravings, I’m thinking about diving into this book, written by the current Countess in residence at the real Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle.

Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die — The marketing nerd in me loves the concept of this one: “Why do some ideas thrive while others die? And how do we improve the chances of worthy ideas? Made to Stick is a book that will transform the way you communicate ideas. It’s a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures)–the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of “the Mother Teresa Effect”; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas–and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick.”

Any of these sound good to you?

3.2.12

This week I…

+ Worked on three (count ‘em THREE) client projects. Awesomesauce.
+ Guest posted at two of my faves (here and here if you missed it).
+ Tried out a new conditioner. It smells nice.
+ Had lunch with Jeanne at Zazie. A) I heart her and really, truly admire her business acumen, and B) I want to take Joe there for brunch ASAP.
+ Saw and decided on a wedding venue. I’ll share deets once it’s official and papers have been signed, but funnily enough, I’m betting A LOT of you have actually seen the space! Well… sorta. You’ll see.
+ Am working on setting up my accounting systems for Vivaleur. Funny how those mundane little tasks can make you feel so GOOD.
+ Started working out again. I won’t be able to walk for a few days, but it felt amazing.
+ Sent out invites to a St. Patrick’s Day/Spring Fling party. I can’t wait to host friends!

Link of the week: I’m curious what you guys all think about the Pinterest kerfuffle. If you haven’t heard about it, this post sums it up (and also takes a drastic though not necessarily unreasonable stance). What do you think? It is hard for me to imagine life without Pinterest now…but the legal grey areas make me a little uncomfortable. I’m a girl who tends to play by the rules, even though I like to think I don’t. Check it out and share your thoughts!  (UPDATE: Via the previous post, I found this blog post and a follow-up with input from Ben Silbermann this morning and it’s even MORE food for thought! I’m so conflicted, you guys…)

Oh and duh…have a great weekend!

The Word

Welp, it’s been exactly one week since I started working from home full time. So far, so good! I will say that the differences between working in a cube versus in my own home office all day everyday are almost jarring in a way. Of course that seems like it would be obvious, but you never realize these things until you’re in it. I’m still getting used to the dramatic change in routine, but I’m happy!

Several of you guys have been so sweet to email me or chat me to see how things are going. Thank you! Here are a few things I’ve observed:

+ My upstairs neighbor, who also works from home, seems to get a lot of phone calls during the day. Note to self: figure out how he drums up business.
+ My downstairs neighbor works from home too. Plan: weekly lunches with my fellow building co-workers!
+ As much as I love my ghost chair, it’s extremely uncomfortable to sit in for 12 hours a day. New mission: find a chic, comfortable, affordable, ergonomic desk chair. Twitter suggested this one, but I had one like this at my old job, and I found it extremely uncomfortable. I think it’s the petite stature. Also, I’m not spending a thousand freaking dollars on a desk chair.
+ I need to take time to get up and MOVE. In an office, I was up and about more than I realized. Here, I have a tendency to park it in my chair and not move for hours on end. Hello, stiff shoulders. The good news is I can stretch it out anytime I want. Doing lunges next to your cube was generally frowned upon. And by frowned upon I mean awkward for everyone.
+ In the same vein, I gotta drink more water. I don’t have co-workers to go hang out and make tea with in the staff kitchen.
+ One of the small joys: being able to play music as loud as I want and light a candle while I work. Both were previously verboten.
+ If you do laundry in the middle of the day, you never have to compete for the building’s washer or dryer. It’s fantastic.
+ It’s an exhilarating feeling to be able to tackle projects I’ve been putting off for months, simply because there was no time to do them.
+ I love working with clients!
+ I think this is going to be good. Really good.

Happy almost Friday, everyone!

Some Notes + This Weekend

My oh my what a week it’s been. To say that I was overwhelmed by all of your support after Monday’s announcement is an understatement. You guys. I can’t tell you how much your comments, emails and tweets mean to me. Truly, I am so humbled by your words of encouragement. And I feel honored too. I told Joe that the part about all of this that means the most to me is that I am inadvertently inspiring so many of you to keep chasing after your goals. I am promising you now that I will continue to do everything I can to inspire and encourage you. Let’s start with this: Don’t settle. KEEP GOING. Have faith in yourself and in your future. Okay?

Now, on to a few other notes and ramblings (including the winner of the Refinery 29 + Herringbone giveaway, and why the above photo references Friday when it’s Thursday…): (more…)
