The week ahead

Monday morning and it’s back to work! This week will be a busy one for sure… if only I had a workspace like this to make crossing items off my to-do list all the more pleasurable…

My week will include two work holiday parties, a get together with a girlfriend, and of course, plenty of blogging too. Joe is actually out of town this week, so I might take advantage of it and watch all those movies that you really can’t watch with a guy around. Takeout may be ordered. It’s fun to pretend you’re a single gal, at least for a few days!

Have a great week, everyone!

Sun and Sand in Palm Springs

We were out in the desert from late Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning, and our timing couldn’t have been better. Palm Springs was in the midst of a freak fall heat wave, which meant temps in the high 90s and lots of sunshine. Since Joe and I had planned on doing nothing but hanging out by the pool, this was perfect!

As I mentioned before we left, we stayed at the Viceroy hotel. Are you sitting down kids? Okay…I wasn’t as blown away as I thought I would be.

I know that’s hard to believe when you see pictures like the ones above. And yeah, I feel a little nuts writing that too. The grounds of the hotel were absolutely beautiful. I loved how well manicured the walkways and gardens were. The landscaping was the perfect mix of glamorous while maintaining that vintage old Hollywood feel. The layout of everything made it feel like you were in this little countryside villa, tucked away from everyone.

But, the hotel! You want to know what happened! Well, like I was saying, the grounds are really pretty. There are three small pools (two of them featured above, plus a third that I didn’t get a shot of). The hotel is arranged such that groups of small cottages/bungalows (they call them “villas”) are dotted throughout the property, with many around this fountain in the picture above. Between the villas are a series of buildings that are basically like old motels that have been renovated — I understand this is how a lot of properties are out in Palm Springs, but I don’t think I was expecting this at the Viceroy. So yeah, the building we stayed in was pretty dated, with the only updates being the aesthetic design elements done by Kelly Wearstler.

Our particular hotel room was showing A LOT of wear and tear. The shower curtain was a bit stained. The bathtub had chip marks on the bottom. The rooms, which are painted a stark white, had dirt marks on the walls (there was a handprint on the wall next to our closet…um, ok?). The furnishings in our room had a lot of fray marks on the fabric. That iconic yellow chair you always see in Viceroy pictures? Totally awesome. Except it was dirty and very worn. It made me wonder — did they use super cheap materials for this overhaul? In many ways, it just didn’t live up to the “luxury” billing.

The room itself was quite sparse and sort of oddly laid out. We had opted for a King Studio, which ended up being less a “studio” and more of a standard hotel room. You can get these rooms for a steal on their website if you book 21 days in advance! I will say that in the end, the super low rate we paid was what made the stay okay. If we’d paid the normal rack rate for our room, I think we would’ve been very disappointed.

There’s not much to report on in Palm Springs because we really laid low! Reading and snacking by the pool, going out to eat, enjoying the live music the hotel had one evening (man does that place become a scene!). It was very relaxed and low key…exactly what we wanted.

After a few nights in the desert, we were ready to head to LA and meet up with college friends. We were staying at a hotel we’d never even heard of, and were we in for a surprise…

But you’ll have to wait until later today to read about it. In the meantime, I’m honored to be guest posting on Liz’s blog So Much to Smile About. It’s her birthday this Thursday, and I’ve put together a little post with some gift ideas I think any birthday girl would adore! Be sure to stop by and show her some birthday love.

Wanderlust

I sometimes wonder if there’s something about 22 years worth of spring breaks that have made an indelible mark on my psyche. Because every year around this time, without fail, I am struck with a severe case of wanderlust. Get me on a plane and to somewhere other than here, and I’m happy.

Maybe it’s that come spring, the organized part of me finds it completely necessary to start arranging any big vacations we want to take during the rest of the year. Last year, it was Paris. This year, things are still up in the air, and though we had talked about returning to France, I find myself more and more drawn to Italy. And specifically, the Amalfi Coast. Wouldn’t it be amazing to wake up in Positano, spend the day exploring the quaint hillside towns, and cool off in the afternoon with a glass of Limoncello?

Nothing is in the works yet, but these photos I found of the Amalfi Coast will make it very hard to wake up for work.

Have any of you spent time in Italy? Where did you go? I’ve also heard rave reviews of Cinque Terre, which is also on my list, as is the Tuscan countryside. Or, am I way off? Is there some other fabulous place we should visit this year?

Breakfast for dinner

Has this ever happened to you?

It’s just about dinner time. You open up the fridge, and things look pretty barren. You have a few leftover eggs that have a couple of days left in them, a nubbin of cheese, and some weary looking vegetables. Totally time to call in for takeout, no?

Not even!

One of the dishes I love to make when I need to “Macgyver” something together is a frittata. Quick, simple, and a great dumping ground for all those ingredients that might not be at their peak (but would be a shame to throw out), frittatas are entirely customizable to what you have on hand as well as your own personal preferences.

On Sunday night, I had some wilting spinach (not crisp or fresh enough for a raw salad); a carton of eggs; a stubby, almost forgotten slab of white cheddar; a jar of roasted red peppers; some frozen bacon; and some pine nuts.

Obviously, enough ingredients to make a frittata masterpiece.

Now here’s the thing. You might say to yourself, “Pine nuts? Roasted peppers? Who keeps this stuff on hand and claims an empty pantry?” (more…)

I just can’t help myself

Sat in bed watching every iteration of the HP:6 trailer tonight. And now, of course, I have to start re-reading the entire series, like, tomorrow (for the 10th time, no less). I found myself scheming, I should aim to have all seven read before July 15. Hmm. Wonder if that’s doable. Then I had to laugh outloud. Doable? Please. I’ll be done with all 7 by next weekend.

p.s. — I have to give a shout out to Vodpod here. Embedding vids into WordPress has always been a little hit or miss for me.  Sometimes, embed codes from YouTube and the like would work, sometimes not. Tonight, as I was just about to pull my hair out trying to get these Hulu videos embedded, I came across Vodpod on a WordPress support forum. And presto, an answer to my prayers: I can now embed and share videos across multiple social networking platforms (Twitter included) at the click of a mouse. I f***ing love the Internet, seriously. And, as a second shout out, I have to give it up for Google, the solution to all my problems. Have a question? Here’s a great piece of advice: JFGI.
